في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين بدأ الشعر العربي الحديث يتطور في اتجاهات شتى، متأثراً، بالدرجة الأولى، بنوع من الانفتاح على الثقافات الغربية، من أنكلوسكسونية أو فرنسية، تبعاً للبلد العربي الذي وقع تحت الاحتلال الغربي، بعد انهيار الإمبراطورية العثمانية، ولأن الشعر ديوان العرب، في نظر الكثير من أبناء العرب، كان التطوّر من طريق الأخذ عن الغرب عملية بطيئة لكن أواسط القرن العشرين شهدت حركة ناشطة في تطوّر الشعر العربي، باتجاه الابتعاد عن شعر الشطرين والقافية الموحّدة، واتخاذ التفعيلة وحدة إيقاعية في أسطر من الشعر تتراوح طولاً وتختلف قافية. وقد أطلق على شعر التفعيلة هذا تسمية غير دقيقة، هي "الشعر الحرّ" فغدت من الخطأ الشائع الذي دوّنه الصحيح المهجور. لكن "الشعر الحرّ" بمعناه الدقيق بدأ يظهر في ما نشر في الدوريات والمجلات الأدبية، مثيراً ردود فعل واعتراضات شتى، قوامها التفريق التراثي بين الشعر والنثر، غير أن أمثلة قليلة من جيّد الشعر الحرّ استطاعت أن تثبت وجوداً، على ما فيها من إشارات ثقافية، إلى آداب أجنبية، وأساليب غريبة على الشعر العربي.
وقد جرى ذلك تحت مظلّة "الحداثة" التي كانت في الغالب مفهوماً غير واضح المعالم والحدود في أذهان الكثيرين من الشعراء والقرّاء معاً. وفي العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة من القرن العشرين تفاقمت ظاهرة غير صحيحة في المجتمع العربي، اتخذت شكل الاغتراب عن الوطن والعيش في بلاد غريبة، لأسباب ودوافع شتى. وكان بين المغتربين عدوٌّ كبير من الشعراء والأدباء، تفرقوا في شتات عجيب في أقاصي المعمورة، وحملوا معهم ثقافتهم التي بدأت تتأثر بدرجات متفاوتة بثقافات ولغات بلاد الشتات. وكان من بعض نتائج ذلك شعر يحمل مياسم غريبة في معانيه وأساليبه.
في هذا الإطار تأتي دراسة الكتاب "مدائن الوهم" حيث يستعرض الباحث من خلالها أمثلة من شعر الحداثة والشتات في العربية، الذي نشر في حدود العقدين الأخيرين من القرن العشرين. والغالب من هذه الأمثلة ويرتفع كثيراً فوق المتوسط من الجيّد من الشعر، عند مقارنته بالشوامخ من تراث الشعر العربي، والتماس التسويغ لذلك بأنه شعر "حداثة" يختلف عن شعر "التراث" هو سعيٌ في حدود الوَهْم. كما أن التفرق في بلاد الشتات، بحثاً عن ظروف حياة أفضل يشير في كثير من أمثلة شعر المغتربين أنه سعي في مدائن الوهم.
