"إرتياد الآفاق" سلسلة من الكتب في أدب الرحلات، أعدها وحررها نوري الجراح وهو يهدف منها إلى بعث واحد من أعرق ألوان الكتابة في ثقافتنا العربية من خلال تقديم كلاسيكيات أدب الرحلة، إلى جانب الكشف عن نصوص مجهولة لكتاب ورحالة عرب ومسلمين جابوا العالم ودونوا يومياتهم، وانطباعاتهم ونقلوا صوراً لما شاهدوه وخبروه في أقاليمية قريبة وبعيدة، لا سيما في القرنين الماضيين، وفي هذا الكتاب الذي هو واحد من هذه السلسلة المذكورة، يجمع المحرر ما دوّنه الرحالة العراقي إلياس الموصلي عن رحلته الفريدة من نوعها والتي هي أقدم رحلة لشرقي إلى أميركا وفيها يسجل وقائع رحلته التي قام به إلى أميركا من النصف الثاني من القرن السابع عشر، والتي دامت 26 سنة (1668-1683). وقد جاءت هذه الرحلة في الفترة التي شهدت فيها القارة الأميركية حمَّى بناء المستوطنات والبحث عن الذهب والفضة وانتشار العبودية، ونشاط "ديوان التفتيش" الكاثوليكي وعمليات التنصير والتعذيب والإبادة التي مارسها المستعمرون الأسبان ضد أبناء القارى الأميركية. والرحلة، كما سيلاحظ القارئ، حافلة بالقصص والمرويّات والوقائع حول ذلك.
يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه أقدم نصّ عربي عن القارة الأميركية وضعه الرحالة العراقي إلياس حنا الموصلي الذي انطلق من بغداد سنة 1668 في رحلة إلى "العالم الجديد" استمرت نحو عشر سنوات، ليكون بذلك أول رحالة شرقي يغامر في الوصول إلى أميركا الوسطى الجنوبية في النصف الثاني من القرن السابع عشر. الكتاب بصدر للمرة الأولى بالعربية، ويعتبر بحق وثيقة فريدة من نوعها عن أوضاع القارة الأميركية في فترة شهدت حمّى البحث عن الذهب والفضة، فضلاً عن قيمته كأثر أدبي لا يخلو من طرافة.
رحلة الموصلي تكشف عن صور مؤلمة لأوضاع أحفاد حضارة المايا والإنكا وغيرهم من الأعراق التي سكنت القارة من أقدم الأزمنة. ورحالتنا العربي ينقل، بعفوية وحياد، قصصاً حزينة وأخباراً متواترة عن المصائر الفاجعة التي تسبب بها سعار النهب الاستعماري، وما كرّسه التعسف الأوروبي من خوف تأصل في الشخصية الوطنية لمن بقي حياً من السكان الأصليين لتلك البلاد.
