جميعنا يدرك أن للأطفال المعاقين الحق الكامل في التعلم والمشاركة الفاعلة في الحياة، بغض النظر عن جنسه وعمره وقدراته، ولمساعدتهم على تحقيق هذا الهدف لا بد من دمجهم في المدارس العامة، لأن ذلك يعمل على تنمية مداركهم، وعلى توفير بيئة تربوية ومعيشية أقرب ما تكون إلى البيئة الطبيعية.
الدمج الصحيح يتيح للأطفال ذوي الإعاقات أن يكونوا أعضاء فاعلين في مجتمعهم، بدلاً من أن يكونا عالة عليه إذ إن دمج الأطفال المعاقين في المدارس مع أقرانهم غير المعاقين سيساعدهم على تكوين صداقات، وسيزيد إحساسهم بالإنتماء إلى المجتمع، الأمر الذي سيؤدي إلى تحفيزهم، وتنمية قدراتهم من ناحية، وسيغير من ناحية أخرى، نظرة الأطفال غير المعاقين إلى الإعاقة، حتى تترسخ قناعات جديدة بان المعاقين أيضاً يمتلكون القدرات التي تؤهلهم للإعتماد على أنفسهم.
في هذا الكتاب ندرس معنى الدمج التربوي وفوائده والأسس الصحيحة التي يقوم عليها الدمج حتى يكون نافعاً وفعالاً ولا يصحبه تأثير سلبي على من ليس لديهم إعاقات عند دمج الأطفال ذوي الإعاقات في نفس الفصول الدراسية.
كما يحاول الكتاب بشيء من التفصيل بعض أنواع الإعاقات التي يعمل الدمج بشكل إيجابي في تدريس الأطفال الذين يعانون من تلك الإعاقات ولعل من أهم هذه الإعاقات التي تحتاج إلى عملية الدمج: إضطرابات التوحد، الإعاقات السمعية والبصرية.
