ابن أبى زيد القيرواني هو الإمام العلامة عالم أهل المغرب في زمانه أبو محمد عبد الله ابن أبي زيد القيرواني المالكي، ويقال له: مالك الصغير، فهو الذي لخص المذهب، وألف فيه كتباً كثيرة، وكتاب "الرسالة" الذي نقلب صفحاته هو أحد أهم مؤلفاته، وقد تناول هذه الرسالة بالشرح الشيخ الشرنوبي الأزهري المالكي الذي قال عن هذه الرسالة بأنها أول مختصر في المذهب المالكي، ولأهميتها أراد تقريبا للطالب بضبط لمباني، وبشرح ما أغلق فيها من معاني، وأما الرسالة فقد أودعها ابن أبي زيد القيرواني ما جاء عن الإمام مالك في المسائل الفقهية مختصراً من واجب أمور الديانة مما تنطقه الألسنة وتعتقده القلوب وتعمله الجوارح، وما يتصل بالواجب من ذلك بالسنن من مؤكدها ونوافلها، وشيء من الآداب فيها، وجمل من أصول الفقه وفندته على مذهب الإمام مالك بن أنس، وطريقته مع بيان ما أشكل وتفسيره بالعودة إلى تفسير الراسخين وبيان المتفقهين، فجاءت الرسالة على أحسن وجه واضح، معني في بيان مذهب الإمام مالك، دون اختصار مخل أو إطناب ممل.
