هذا الكتاب يعرف المرء أن الفتوحات الإسلامية كانت، في معظمها، برية عسكرية، غير أن هنالك حقائق تاريخية أخرى مجهولة لم يكشف النقاب عنها بما فيه الكفاية تثبت أن نمطاً آخر من الفتوحات يكاد يقارب حدود الأسطورة، وهي فتوحات بحرية سلمية حملت راية الإسلام ولغة المسلمين الى جنوب شرق آسيا وأرخبيل الملايو، وقادها تجار و دعاة وعلماء وجغرافيون وفارون من البطش السياسي وضيق الأفق الديني اللذين سيطرا في فترة ما على صناع القرار في أمصار الخلافة.
كما يحاول أن يقرب معالم هذا القصة المنسية غير المعروفة -التي كتبت فوق مياه وأراضي الملايو- من معارف القارىء العربي غير المتخصص الذي يعرف الكثير عن العلاقات(الإسلامية- الأوربية) في العصور الأموية والعباسية والفاطمية، ولكنه بالتأكيد لا يعرف الكثير عن توازنات القوى السائدة في المنطقة(الإسلامية- الملايوية)، ولا عن كيفية وصول وانتشار الإسلام في آخر أقطار البر والبحر الآسيويين.
وهذا الكتاب أشبه ما يكون بالسفينة الشراعية التي حملت أوائل الرواد من سواحل الخليج العربي وعمان الى الهند والبنغال والصين وجزر الملايو. ومن أهم ما تحدث عنه: في البصرة: الإمام والسندباد, في حضرموت: الهجرة الى الرمال المتحركة، في الهند: على الطريق الى آتشيه، في الصين: المسلمون يسبقون ماركو بولو، في جمقا وسلندوغ، في جاوا والزابج، ابن بطوطة، في فاليمبانغ وقرسىء وتوبان، في ملقا وآتشيه وديماك وباتتن وسولو، في الملايو: على طريق النصر.
