ليس من السهل الكتابة عن الشعر النجفي وما مر به من أدوار تاريخية منذ تأسيس الجامعة النجفية إلى هذا اليوم، فقد سار سيراً حثيثاً ملازماً لحلقات العلم والأدب، ومرت به فترات ازدهر بها ومر أيضاً بفترات خمول واضمحلال حتى كاد أن ينسى، إلا أن ازدهاره وخموله ملازم لازدهار الحوزة العلمية وخمولها. وقد كتب عن الفكر النجفي بكل مجالاته وبصوره عامة، العشرات من الكتاب والمؤرخين الذين أغنوا المكتبة العربية بما جاءت به أقلامهم.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب هو واحد ممن اعتنوا بالشعر النجفي عموماً، والشعراء النجفين خصوصاً، وهو في كتابه هذا يسجل ويؤرخ لسير كمٍّ من الشعراء النجفين الأصل والمقيمين أو المهاجرين عن النجف، كما ويجمع بعضاً من أمتع وأجمل مخطوطاتهم الشعرية المنثورة، دون أن يذكر عليها أي تعليق أو نقد، وقوامه في كل ما جمع مجهوده الشخصي ومقابلاته الشخصية لهؤلاء الشعراء، أما ترتيبه لمادة كتابه فجاءت وفق ترتيب حروف المعجم العربي، متبعاً الأول فالأول، ومخالفاً للشيخ "علي الخاقاني" في ترتيبه لمادة موسوعته "شعراء الفرى".
