يمثل هذا المؤلّف القيم مرجعاً، ضم بين دفتيه تراجم وسير وأخبار مجموعة كبيرة من أسماء شخصيات علمية وأدبية من الماضين من رجالات وأعلام، اجتهد المصنف بتدوينها عبر فترات زمنية متباعدة، ثم ليضم إلى قائمة الأعلام الماضين مجموعة ممن عاصر هم منذ ولادته سنة 1380هـ إلى سنة 1418هـ، حيث وجد أنه وبهذه المدة المحصورة لم يجمع شمل هؤلاء المعاصرين والماضين سوى هذا الكتاب الذي وسمه بــ"المنتخب من أعلام الفكر والأدب"، وتفاوتت مراجعه ومصادره بين كتب، ومجلات، وجرائد، ودوريات وفهارس، أو مقدمات كتب المترجمين أنفسهم، أو مقابلة الشخصيات المترجم لها، أو بأخبار ممن يخصّهم من الأبناء والأحفاد والأقارب، بالإضافة إلى مصادر متفرقة.
ويشير المصنف بأن العبرة فيما خطّه من تراجم و ما سار عليه السلف الصالح من تدوين أحوال أهل الفكر والأدب حتى لا تقصر الهمم، ويكون الدافع القوي للسير على مناهجهم واقتفاء آثارهم وأخذ العبرة منهم للوصول إلى أعلى مراتب الكمال البشري، فيكون القدوة الصالحة للأجيال الآتية.
هذا من ناحية، ومن ناحية ثانية، فإنه ولأهمية هذا الموضوع، جاء عمله على طريقتين: أولاهما: أن يكون المترجم له ممن له إنتاج علمي أو أدبي أو تدريسي، أو من هؤلاء الذين لم يكتب عنهم مطلقاً، أو كتب عنه لكن لم يوفّ حقّه، وثانيهما: اتخاذه أسلوبين في سرد التراجم وهما: أسلوب الإمام الشيخ أغا بزرك الطهراني في طبقاته وطريقة التفصيل المعاصر.
مستخلصاً من ذلك ما سيطلع عليه القارئ عند مطالعته لهذا الكتاب، على أن هناك شخصيات علمية وأدبية يذكر المصنف أنه لم يتمكن من التوصل إلى معرفة أحوالهم لقلة المصادر المتوفرة لديه، فلجأ حينها إلى ذكر ما تيسر له حولها من معلومات ولو طفيفة.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المصنف سيستدرك مؤلفه هذا هو بمثابة ملحق والذي يمثّل الجزء المستدرك على المنتخب من أعلام الفكر والأدب.
