يعتبر هذا الكتاب درة من درر التراث العربي الإسلامي الزاخر بالمآثر والمفاخر العالية وخصوصاً التراث الإسلامي الصوفي، وهو يتحدث عن الفقهاء والأولياء وكراماتهم وحكايا ظريفة وممتعة تتحف قارئها بأبهى الأفكار وأجمل الصور عن الإيمان بالله تعالى والتسليم بقدرته والتوكل عليه أثناء الأزمان وفي المحن، والفرج الذي يحدث لهؤلاء الذين نذروا أنفسهم للعبادة والتفكر بخلق الله وقدرته وحمده وثنائه على الدوام فقد وفقهم الله تعالى لاتباع الحق في العلم والعمل، وحفظهم من الزيغ والزلل.
كذلك تحث اليافعي في كتابه هذا عن سبب تأليف الكتاب وأنه رفع سؤال يتضمن أسئلة عشرة أجاب عنها في عشرة فصول حيث بدأ في الفصل الأول في الجواب عن السؤال الأول المتضمن إثبات كرامة الأولياء، وانها حق، ثم تعرض لشرح المقامات العشرة التي هي التوبة والزهد والورع والصبر والفقر والشكر والخوف والرجاء والتوكل والرضا. وبما أن اليافعي كان شاعراً بارعاً فقد ضمّن الكتاب قصيدة مدح بها النبي عليه السلام. فجاء الكتاب دليلاً وافياً وشرحاً كافياً للأولياء والصالحين وكراماتهم وبرهاناً لعقيدتهم وإيمانهم بالله سبحانه وتعالى.
