تُعد الرماية من أقدم الممارسات التي قام بها الإنسان منذ بداية وجوده على أرض المعمورة، إذ اُستخدمت الرماية لأغراض الصيد وتوفير الغذاء الضروري للإنسان، سواء الصيد البري أو البحري، ثم أصبحت مهارة رياضية إلا إنها لم تستعمل كرياضة تنافسية فقط وإنما استعملت كمنافسة شخصية لها أهداف عديدة ومنها المبارزة الفردة بين شخصية والتي كانت تؤدي في أغلب الأحيان إلى موت أحد المتنافسين، لذلك حاربها الحكام والملوك وخاصة في بريطانيا، وأصدروا قوانين كثيرة لمنع الرماية من الإنتشار بين أفراد الشعب، وأصدروا الأوامر لمنع الأفراد عن التدريب على هذه المهارة.
ومع ذلك فقد تمت هذه الرياضة وازدهرت في خلال العصر - الحالي ودخلت في كثير من الدورات المحلية والإقليمية والدولية وأصبح لها بطولات متعددة ومسابقات مختلفة يمتحن فيها الصبر والدقة وقوة الأعصاب، ويمارسها حالياً الرجال والنساء وأنديتها منتشرة في كثير من بلدان العالم.
وقد وجد الباحثان أن من الضروري تأليف كتاب يتطرق إلى جميع الجوانب الخاصة بهذه الرياضة كتأريخ هذه الرياضة وأنواعها ومبادئها وإدراج بعض القوانين الخاصة بها فضلاً عن توضيح مواصفات الأسلحة المستخدمة فيها.
