ينفتح هذا الكتاب على واحد من شعراء العصر الأموي وهو الشاعر "جرير" (33ه-115ه) الذي عُرف بين شعراء "النقائض" أي المناظرات بالمعنى الدقيق لهذه الكلمة. والمناظرات هو فن أموي، غذته، وطورته هذه البيئة الجدلية، وما انبدت فيها من طرق حوار وإستدلال في كل شيء، لم يحدث أن اتصل بهذا الفن كل من الفرزدق وجرير، وألّفا على ضوئه شعر النقائض الذي فاز به جرير أيّما فوز.
في هذا الكتاب يتناول الدكتور عبد المجيد الحرّ الشاعر جرير بدراسة مستفيضة بعد أن مهّد لها بالوقوف على اصول العصر وخصائصه ومميزاته التي استمد شاعرنا منها طبيعة شعره. وهو الشاعر الذي أضاف صاحب الأغاني قوله: "وفضل جريراً عليه" وإزاء هذا الرأي دأب المؤلف على دراسة جريراً من خلال عصره، المتوهج بحرارة العصبيات الحزرية والثورات والمشاحنات والفتن والإضطرابات. في هذه البيئة نشأ جريراً البدوي في حياته وفي شعره، وهذه النشأة بلغت على ثمانين عاماً، ويؤيد ذلك ما يذكره جريرٌ من شيبه في أول قصيدة مدح بها عبد الملك بن مروان، حين أوفده الحجاج إليه، حين ولي العراق سنة (75ه / 695م). حتى اتفقت العرب على أن جريراً كان يسبك الشعر بفاعلية رقيقة محكمة. ويسبكه في قالب مضمون المعاني، محكم الشكل، يمتاز بنكهة المعرفة المجبولة بثقافة فطرية امتاز بها شعره.
وبقصد معرفة الكثير عن الشاعر جرير تم للمؤلف توزيع الكتاب إلى أربعة فصول: يدرس الفصل الأول الشاعر جرير من خلال عصره (الحياة الدينية – العقلية – السياسية ...)، أما الفصل الثاني فيتحدث فيه عن نشأته وثقافته وصفاته حتى وفاته، ويستعرض الفصل الثالث إتصال الشاعر جرير بأرباب السلطان منهم: جرير ويزيد ومعاوية وإبن الزبير والوليد بن عبد الملك وآخرون. ويأتي الفصل الرابع والأخير للوقوف على أغراضه الشعرية: المدح، الهجاء، الرثاء، الغزل، الفخر، ومختارات من شعره.
