لا بُدَّ لأيّ دارسٍ لمكانة العلماء عند المسلمين ومكانتهم في المجتمع، من التعرُّف إلى عاملين هامّين كان لهما الأثر الرئيس على مكانتهم هذه، أولهما: نظرة الإسلام إلى العلماء وإعلاؤه مكانتهم، وثانيها: نظرة العلماء لأنفسهم ولدورهم في مجتمعهم، مع عدم إغفال دور الأوضاع الإجتماعية التي مرَّ بها المجتمع الذي كانوا يعيشون فيه.
وكذلك تلك المكانة ترتفع وتنخفض وفاقاً لأوضاع السِّن، ودرجة التحصيل العلمي والثقافي والخبرة المُرَبِّيَة التي اكتسبوها بالممارسة، كذلك كانت ترتبط بمدى شعور العلماء بما لُهمْ من حقوق وما عليهم من واجبات، ومقدار ما يسعون إليه من قَرْنِ العِلْم بالعمل وتطبيق ما ورد في القرآن الكريم والسُّنَّة النبويّة الشريفة، وآثار السلف الصالح، بحيث يكونون الأمثولة والقدوة الحسنة والنموذج المحتذى الذي لا يكذب قولُه فِعْلُه، لقد ساهمت هذه كلها مساهمة كبيرة في رسم الخطوط العريضة لعلاقة العلماء بعامة الناس، والزملاء، والمتعلمين، والسلطة الحاكمة.
ولقد جاء هذا البحث في دراسة الصورة المثلي للعلماء عند المسلمين حيث سنرى مكانة إجتماعية مرموقة للعلماء من خلال معرفتهم لأنفسهم ولمكانتهم، وإعتزازهم بذلك، ولمدى تقدير المجتمع لهم بدءاً من القمة وإنتهاءً بالقاعدة.
وقد يتضمن البحث:
-مدخل: "مكانة العالم في نظر الإسلام، ونظرته إلى مكانته ودوره في المجتمع".
-الفصل الأول: "علاقة العلماء بعامة الناس".
-الفصل الثاني: "علاقة العلماء بزملائهم".
-الفصل الثالث: "علاقة العلماء بأصحاب السلطة".
-الفصل الرابع: "المستوى الخلقي والمعيشي والمالي للعلماء".

-الفصل السادس: "الخدمات الإجتماعية للعلماء ومكانة المرأة العالمة".
