يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تمييز التصور الذي حملته الفلسفة لنفسها وللاستعارة، بمختلف تجلّياتها: الاستعارة والتمثيل، والتمثيل القصصي، ويقوم في الوقت نفسه بمراجعة ذلك التصور في ضوء مراجعات فكرية قديمة وحديثة، والبحث عن معالم نظرية للاستعارة الفلسفية تشير إلى خصوصية الاستعمال الفلسفي للاستعارة. ولم يكتف الكتاب بالتنظير بل سعى إلى التوغل في نصوص الفلاسفة والتمثيل بأمثلة من استعارات، وتمثيلات، وتمثيلات قصصية من واقع تلك النصوص. وإذا كان الكتاب يعترف بصعوبة التخلص من إسار النظرة الفلسفية، فإنه حاول التخلص منها، وذلك باقتراح رؤية جدلية تأخذ بعين الاعتبار علاقة اللحظة الاستعارية (الاشتباهية) بسابق المعنى الفلسفي الذي يُفترض اكتماله، وعلاقتها بلاحق المعاني الفلسفية التي تفتح المجال لتكونها. وإذا كان يحاول أن يضع نفسه خارج الأوضاع الفلسفية فإنه لا يُخفي حمله لتصورات خاصة للحقيقة وللفكر، تصورات تسمح بمنح اللحظة الاستعارية مكانة تجعلها فجراً جديداً للمعنى الفلسفي.
