يعتبر "جون لوك" الفيلسوف الأول الذي وضع مشكلة المعرفة الإنسانية في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي موضع البحث المستقل المنتظم في كتابه "مقالة في العقل البشري" الذي يعتبر بمثابة أول محاولة جدية في هذا الصدد. وأنه كان بمثابة مرحلة انتقال ضرورية في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي في القرن السابع عشر تترجم لروح العصر-وهي الروح العلمية، في مختلف الميادين، سياسية كانت أو فلسفية-وذلك لاستيعابه للاتجاهات التجريبية عند فرنسيس بيكون، ونتائج العلوم الطبيعية عند كل من بويل، غاليليو، نيوتن، وتقديمها في فلسفة التجريبية النقدية تعبيراً تمهيدياً تطورياً لفلسفة جديدة اتضحت معالمها عند هيوم، رسل ووليم جيمس. هذا بالإضافة إلى ما امتازت به فلسفته من تحليل للفكر وعملياته تحليلاً دقيقاً، وإلى ما قدمه لمعاصريه من دراسات هامة وقيمة، خاصة في التفرقة بين الصفات الأولية والصفات الثانوية وتحليل الجوهر وتحليل اللغة.. إلخ.
وقد حاول الباحث في هذا الكتاب القيام بدراسة تحليلية لفلسفة لوك لإظهار ما تقدم عليه من أسس ومبادئ، متبعاً في هذه الأسس والمبادئ طريقة جون لوك الفلسفية، ليوضح كيف أقام لوك نظريته في المعرفة، معتمداً في ذلك على مؤلفاته نفسها. وكذا على الخطابات المتبادلة بينه وبين أصدقائه أمثال كلارك، كولينز، وسيتلنغ فليت، التي كانت تتناول كثيراً من المشكلات الفلسفية بالتحليل أو الرد والدفاع. كما حاول الباحث في هذا الكتاب، الكتابة بطريقة نقدية مقارنة لإبراز الملامح الأساسية للاتجاه التجريبي بصفة عامة، وفي فلسفة لوك بصفة خاصة، ومدى أصالة هذا الاتجاه عنده. جاعلاً نقده لفلسفته في ضوء هذا الاتجاه، مبيناً كيف أنه ينتهي أحياناً إلى بعض النتائج التي تختلف عن البداية التجريبية التي بدأ بها مناقشاً أسباب ذلك، مثل تأثره ببعض الفلسفات العقلية والتراث الفكري المدرسي الذي تلقاه في أكسفورد. بالإضافة إلى ذلك حاول الباحث في كتابه هذا بيان رأي لوك، باللجوء إلى المقارنة كلما سمح المجال بذلك.
