في كتابه هذا يسلط الدكتور فاروق عبد المعطي الأضواء على فلسفة أحد أهم مؤسس علم الإجتماع الحديث "أوغست كونت" والتي تعتبر إسهاماته نقطة تحوَل في تاريخ الفكر السوسيولوجي، عندما ميز بين مجموعتين في القضايا أو المشكلات المتميزة، ولكنها متصلة بنظرة، تلك التي تهتم ببناء المجتمع كما هو، وأجزائه والعلاقات المتداخلة بين كل منهما، وذلك الكل الذي يتكوَن من الأجزاء. يعتبر"كونت" أنه لم يتمكن أحد حتى الآن –من إنشاء فلسفة تقرض نفسها على جميع العقول. فالمذاهب المثالية، والمادية، ومذاهب وحدة الوجود، مهما اختلفت أصولها وأشكالها، لم تصل إلا إلة هدم المذاهب المضادة لها دون أن تحقق لنفسها استقراراً نهائياً يقول: "وقد زعمت هذه المذاهب أنها تستطيع تزويدنا بمعرفة عقلية لما هو خارج عن نطاق العلم بطبيعته، وركبها الزهو بتفسير الجوهر، والسبب، والغاية، ونظام ظواهر الكون. ولذا لم تستطع إلا أن تنشئ أفكاراً مؤقتة، كانت بلا شك ضرورية في وقتها، ولكن سرعان ما عفا عليها الزمن وليس أي مذهب ميتافيزيقي إلا مذهباً لاهوتياً يصطبغ بالصبغة العقلية. وفي هذا سر ضعفه؛ إذ سرعان ما يتجرد من الصفة التي أكسبته إيمان الناس به في الزمن الذي عاش فيه ...".
