تعتبر "الحفرة" من خيرة أعمال بلاتونوف أيضاً والتي كتبها في عام 1930 ولم تنشر إلا في عام 1987 تروي أحداثاً تتعلق ببناء منشأة سكينة لتكون صرح الشيوعية في المستقبل؛ لكن الخلاف الناشب بين العمال والفلاحين يؤدي إلى فشل المشروع برمّته حيث تتحول الحفرة معنوياً إلى قبر جماعي.
والرواية تتضمن إدانة للطوباوية في النظام القائم وتجسيداً لإنهيار الأفكار الشيوعية التي تتجاهل واقع الحياة، وتأكيداً على أن النظام الإشتراكي لا يمكن بناؤه إلا على أساس مراعاة واقع المجتمع وظروف البلاد.
ولعل القارئ المعاصر يستشف من رواية "الحفرة" بدايات بناء الإتحاد السوفيتي ككيان دولي وفداحة التجاوزات التي اقترفت آنذاك، وتدفعه الفظائع المرعبة التي يتضمّنها السرد إلى التساؤل: أليست تلك البدايات الرهيبة هي ما قاد هذا الكيان إلى الزوال في النهاية؟.
