كان الباعث لإنجاز هذا الكتاب هو المؤتمر الرابع الذي دعا إليه الأزهر الشريف في عام 1406هـ الموافق 1985 لإحياء السنة المطهرة والسيرة العطرة لسيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقد استقى المؤلف معلوماته من أوثق المصادر وأصحها القرآن الكريم، وجامع الأحاديث، والخصائص الكبرى للإمام السيوطي، وعيون الأثر لابن سيد الناس. ولقد اعتمد المؤلف منهجاً يجمع بين السرد التاريخي والأدلة المستقاة من القرآن والسنة المطهرة فعمد إلى كتاب الله سبحانه وتعالى يستخرج منه الآيات التي نزلت مبينة لصفاته صلى الله عليه وسلم إذ قال تعالى في محكم كتابه العزيز: (وقد جاءكم من الله نورٌ وكتابٌ مبين) فقد وصف الله سبحانه سيدنا المصطفى (بالنور وبالسراج المنير). ثم ينتقل الكاتب إلى الحديث عن آباء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأعمامه وعماته وأخواله وخالاته مروراً بقصة أصحاب الفيل، والبشارات التي بشرت بظهوره صلى الله عليه وسلم وسيرته في قريش قبل البعثة وبدء الوحي وكيفية نزوله والإسراء والمعراج وهجرته إلى المدينة المنورة حتى وفاته صلى الله عليه وسلم كما تطرق إلى فضائل زيارة قبر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث يفوز بشفاعة المصطفى يوم لا ينفع مالٌ ولا بنون.
