هذا الكتاب مؤلّف تاريخي وفكري وتطبيقي من حيث بحثه تطور الأفكار الفلسفية حول الترجمة خلال قرون تمتد من زمن الفلسفة الإغريقية القديمة حتى أيامنا هذه، وعرضه للأفكار والنظريات التي وضعها الفلاسفة الغربيّون حول الترجمة باتباع منهجية المقارنة، ومعالجته موضوع الترجمة من كل جوانبه النظرية والتطبيقية، ويستند المؤلف في نظريته القائلة إن الترجمة الجيدة تهيمن عليها صفة الإبداعية والذاتية إلى الأساطير اليونانية بتصوره صراعاً بين هرمس وأبولون، بين العبودية والإبداع، بين الالتزام بحرفية النص المطلوب ترجمته وإعادة الكتابة فنياً في اللغة المترجَم إليها، مبيناً مدى التفاعل بين النظرية الفلسفية والتنظير للترجمة. من سينتصر في هذا الصراع؟ من يقرأ هذا الكتاب سيحصل على الجواب تباعاً.
ولا يلتزم هذا الكتاب الفريد بالتقسيم المُعتاد إلى فصول، أو عناوين عامة وفرعية، بل يتكوّن من فقرات متتالية مرقمة من 1 إلى 126، وهذا ما لا نجده إلا عند عدد قليل من المفكرين والفلاسفة.
