بين عشية وضحاها، تنتقل المنظمة وقيادتها من موقع الإرهاب-في نظر الإدارة الأميركية-لتكون موضع اهتمام البيض الأبيض، وبشكل يتناسب مع الحدث الذي جاءت هذه القيادة من أجل إنجازه. إن هذا يذكر بالمرحلة التي بدأت فيها أمريكا بالحوار مع منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية بعد قرار المجلس الوطني وخطاب جنيف سنة 1988. اللذين بدأ معهما ما عُرف بهجوم السلام الفلسطيني، ذلك الحوار الذي لم يستمر طويلاً وتوقف بعدما أصبح يدور في حلقة مفرغة. لكن الحوار الأهم، هو الذي كان يدور خارج إطار هذه اللقاءات الرسمية في الغرف المغلقة، عندما كان المؤلف "أبو مازن" والسفير الأمريكي في تونس "بلليترو" ومساعده "هيل" يبحثون في عمق القضايا الجوهرية للصراع العربي الإسرائيلي وكان محور النقاش هدفاً وضعوه نصب أعينهم هو حوار فلسطيني-إسرائيلي يشكل مفتاح السلام.
وكان السفير الأميركي مقتنعاً بأن حزب العمل هو وحده القادر على البدء بهذا الحوار، بينما يبدي مخاوفه من تعنت الليكود وتسلمه السلطة في إسرائيل. كان "أبو مازن" يستعرض تلك الأيام وهو يقف على منصة في البيت الأبيض على يسار وزير خارجية الولايات المتحدة "وان كريستوفر". ويقف على بعد خطوة واحدة بيل كلينتون رئيس الدولة الأمريكية. وقبل ذلك كان الجميع في إحدى قاعات البيت الأبيض بانتظار بدء الاحتفال، يجاملهم الرئيس مرة وزوجته مرة أخرى، والرئيس كارتر والرئيس بوش. ثم بعض كبار موظفي الخارجية، كذلك وزير خارجية النرويج ضيف الشرف المحتفى به، والرجل الذي أشرف ببراعة على مفاوضات أوسلو السرية، كل هذا وغيره يستعرضه "محمود عباس" أو "أبو مازن" موقع الاتفاق في كتابه هذا "طريق أوسلو".
