يسعى كتاب "أصنام المجتمع: بحث في التحيز والتعصب والنفاق الإجتماعي: إلى عرض كيف انتشرت اليوم عبادة الأصنام؟ وما هي الأسباب الدّاعية؟ وكيف أنّ سَدَنَة تلك الأصنام لها من القدرة والقابليّة على نشر الإشاعات والأراجيف التي تعظّم أصنامها، وتزيد في قدسيّتها، وكيف تساهم السَدنة في حرق البُخُور، وتقديم القرابين والأضاحي، وصنعِ الأوهام والأساطير لنيل الحظوة والجاه والشّهرة، والدّفاع عن المصالح.
والخطر كلّ الخطر، أن تتغلغل قدسيّة الأصنام في ضمائر النّاس وعقولهم، وأن تدور حولها الأساطير والخرافات، حتّى تغدوَ بنظر المنافقين والسَذّج من النّاس أنّها جزءً لا يتجزّأ من تكوين المجتمع، وأنّ وجودها شرطٌ أساسيٌ لإحلال التّضامن بين أفراد المجتمع، وإحكام التّوازن بين الفئات الإجتماعيّة المتعارضة، ففي الكتاب محاولة سوسيولوجية لسبر ظاهرة مقدس الجماعة وكيفية تبلورها والآليات التي يشتغل عليها.
