يعدُّ "درء تعارض العقل والنقل" أهم كتب شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية، بل لعله أهم وأعظم ما ألف على الإطلاق، كما صرح بذلك معظم الذين ترجموا لابن تيمية. وموضوع هذا الكتاب، كما يدل عنوانه هو دفع التعارض الذي أقامه المتكلمون والفلاسفة بين العقل والنقل، فيقرر الشيخ الأدلة السمعية، ويبرهن على إفادتها القطع واليقين، فيقول:"أما كتابنا هذا فهو في بيان انتفاء المعارض العقلي وأبطال قول من زعيم تقديم الأدلة العقلية مطلقاً. ومن بعض النقاط الهامة التي عالجها المؤلف، مسألة "العلو"حيث شغلت جزءاً كبيراً من الكتاب، وتعرض فيها ابن تيمية لما ذكره الرازي وابن سينا من "الجهة"و"الفوقية" وغير ذلك، ونقض كلامهما، ثم تعرض بعد ذلك لإثبات وجود الله سبحانه، وقد أبدع في هذا الموضوع بحيث جاء ما كتبه من أعظم ما كتب في مسائل النظر العقلي، فهو يورد أقوال الفلاسفة ويعرضها ثم يقارنها بغيرها من الأقوال ويفندها بعد ذلك قولاً قولاً، ويعرض ابن تيمية بعد ذلك لأقوال الفلاسفة بالأفلاك والعقول العشرة ويذكر أقوالهم في ذلك، خاصة ما جاء عن ابن سينا وابن رشد والغزالي، ثم يبين أوجه التناقض في كلامهم، ويقرر النتيجة التي يتوصل إليها، إلى غير ذلك من المسائل الكلامية والفلسفية التي عالجها هذا الكتاب.
