يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته دراسة تحليلية اجتماعية وتاريخية وأدبية لمختارات من القصص الوطنية المغربية المتميزة، التي نشرت في عهد الحماية، وقد رعي في اختيارها تعرضها لجانب من جوانب المتغيرات التي عرفها المجتمع المغربي إبان الاحتلال الفرنسي والإسباني، كما روعي في دراستها الوقوف على صلاتها الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية والثقافية بتلك المتغيرات، وذلك إبراز لوظيفتها التاريخية، وصفتها الواقعية، ودورها التوثيقي، إيماناً بأن النص الأدبي الوطني الذي يحل فيه الوطن محل المبدع نفسه، وتحل فيه قضايا الشعب محل القضية الشخصية، وتهيمن فيه أجواء الظرف العام على الظرف الفردي الخاص، نص غني بتاريخيته.
وهكذا فقد جاءت هذه الدراسة موزعة على قسمين وملاحق. أما القسم الأول والذي هو الدراسة فقام على أحد عشر محوراً ضم أغلب الإنتاج الوطني القصصي، وهي: الصراع بين القديم والجديد، الصراع بين الشرق والغرب، تمجيد التاريخ الإسلامي والعربي والمغربي، مقاطعة الأجانب، مقاومة الظهير البريري، الاستيطان وقضايا العمال، موقف المغاربة من سياسة القوة والإدماج، تجربة الاعتقال والسجن والتعذيب، التفاف الشعب حول العرش، موقف المغاربة من التجنيد، المقاومة المسلحة.
وسعى القسم الثاني لدراسة القصة القصيرة الوطنية النادرة التي تتوفر فيها الشروط الفنية المتعارف عليها للقصة ومن ثم فقد تم اختيار عشرين نصاً قصصياً، ارتأى الباحث ترتيبها.
