يمثل الكتاب مرجعاً هاماً في الفقه المالكي المطبق في الجزء الغربي من الشمال الأفريقي، وكذلك في عمق الصحراء في أواسط أفريقيا شرقاً وغرباً، وأيضاً في بعض بلاد الشرق. وقد توخى المؤلف أموراً وحرص عليها في هذا الكتاب يمكن أجازها كالتالي: 1-تيسير العبارة، وتسهيل الأسلوب بحيث يكون فهم الكتاب في متناول المتخصصين وغير المتخصصين، 2-الاعتناء بذكر أدلة المسائل والجزئيات من الكتاب والسنة والأصول العامة، دون الاستدلال على شيء من المسائل بالحديث الضعيف إلا إذا كان أكثر العلماء على العمل به، حين لا يكون في المسألة دليل غيره، فالضعيف خير من آراء الرجال، 3-ذكر ما يتصل مع الأحكام من الآداب الشرقية وآداب السلوك، لأنها جزء من الأحكام، لا ينبغي إغفالها، ولا التهوين من أمرها، بل هي مظهر عملي لمدى الالتزام بالأحكام وتطبيقها، 4-وضع فهرساً مفصلاً في آخر كل جزء لما اشتمل عليه ذلك الجزء من مباحث، وفهرساً عاماً في آخر الكتاب لجميع الأجزاء، تم فيه ترتيب المواد التي تناولها الكتاب على الحروف حتى تسهيل الاستفادة منه، 5-تجنيب الكتاب ذكر الخلافات، وتعدد الأقوال في المسألة الواحدة، والالتزام في المتن بالاقتصار على القول الراجح الصحيح في المسألة. وذكر القول الآخر المخالف القوي دليله في الحاشية مع دليله، 6-الاعتناء في الحاشية بذكر الروايات التي جاءت من غير طريق عبد الرحمن ابن القاسم العتقي، عن الإمام مالك، حيث أن كتب الفقه المتأخرة اقتصرت في تقرير المسائل على رواية ابن القاسم في المدونة، وبذلك حرم الباحث في القصة الفقه المالكي من الاطلاع على كثير من الروايات الأخرى الصحيحة في الموطأ وغيره، وفيها ما هو أوفق وأصلح لحال الناس، وأحياناً أرجح وأصح، خصوصاً ما كان منها في الموطأ.
