لقد وضع رسولنا الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم أسس وآداب الدعاء من ناحية كيفية الدعاء، والأوقات التي يستحب فيها الدعاء، وما يستحب الدعاء به، والأدعية المخصوصة لكل وقت من الأوقات، إلى غير ذلك مما يتعلق بالدعاء.
وكل هذا قد تركه لنا رسولنا الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم فيما تركه من أحاديث نبوية شريفة، وقد جمع العلماء هذه الأحاديث بالرواية الصحيحة، وصنفوا مؤلفاتهم في فروع شتى، فمنهم من صنف كتب الصحاح، ومنهم من صنف كتب السنن، ومنهم من صنف كتب المسانيد والمستدركات وغير ذلك من المؤلفات التي تضمنت موضوع الدعاء في طياته، إما بتخصيص باب أو كتاب لهذا الموضوع، أو بين ثنايا الموضوعات الأخرى.
ثم جاء بعد ذلك مَن أفرد هذا الموضوع بالتأليف، فمن هؤلاء الإمام الطبراني صاحب المعاجم الثلاثة: الكبير والأوسط والصغير، فاجتهد إجتهاداً كبيراً في جمع وإختيار مادة هذا الكتاب من حيث إختيار الصحيح والبعد عن الموضوع، وكذلك من حيث الترتيب والتبويب، فأثمر جهده عن درة من درر الحديث ألا وهي "كتاب الدعاء".
