القاضي أبو عبد الله الحسين بن إسماعيل المحاملي عالم، عامل بعلمه، كان محدثاً وفقيهاً مبلغاً حتى كان أسند أهل العراق مع التصدر للإفادة والفتيا ستين سنة، وتولى القضاء. له آثار علمية قليلة بالنسبة لطول عمره وشهرته مع كثرة مشائخه وتلامذته، وسبب ذلك أنه اشتغل بالتدريس ومجالس الإملاء فحال ذلك دون التأليف. ومن آثاره العلمية: كتاب السنن في الفقه، صلاة العيدين، كتاب المحامليات، ذكر فؤاد سزكين، كتاب الدعاء، وهو موضوع التحقيق في هذه الطبعة التي بيد يدينا.
وإذا ما عدنا إلى متن هذا الكتاب لوجدنا أنه جاء مشتملاً على أحاديث خاصة بأدعية السفر بدءاً من خروج المسافر من بيته إلى أن يرجع، وقد جعله مصنفه في أربعة عشر باباً، ترجم لكل باب بما يدل على فقه الأحاديث المذكورة في الباب، ثم ذكر تحت كل باب طائفة من الأحاديث المتدرجة تحت الترجمة بالسند المتصل إلى منتهاه. ففي الكتاب الحديث المرفوع والموقوف والمقطوع والمرسل.
وبالنظر للأهمية التي احتلها هذا الكتاب فدق اهتم سعيد بن موسى القزقي بتحقيقه فعمل على ضبط النص بالشكل التام مع عنايته بضبط الأسماء ومتن الحديث، أعطى رقماً للأبواب الفقهية، كما وأعطى رقماً تسلسلياً عاماً لكل رواية، ترجم لرجال إسناد الحديث، وحكم على سند كل رواية عرف بالأماكن والبقاع وشرح غريب الحديث مع بيانه لما يستفاد من الحديث باختصار، ذيل الطبعة بمجموعة من الفهارس العلمية، منها فهرس الآيات القرآنية، فهرس الأماكن والبقاع، فهرس الكنى، فهرس المصادر والمراجع، فهرس الأعلام الواردين في طرق الحديث مع ذكر سنة الوفاة والميلاد إذا وجد ذلك. بيان حال الراوي جرماً وتعديلاً باختصار مع ذكر أرقام الأحاديث التي ورد الراوي في سندها.
