تنصب معظم الدراسات الإقتصادية الحديثة في محاولة صياغة النظرية الإقتصادية في إطار من العلاقات والأساليب الرياضية للإنتقال بها من الجانب الوصفي في تفسير الظواهر الإقتصادية إلى إعطائها مدلولاتها الكمية الملموسة وعلى الرغم من منطقية التحليل النظري لهذه الظواهر، لكن التحليل الكمي أضاف تكاملاً علمياً رائعاً للمنطق الإقتصادي من خلال الكيفية التي تناولها الإقتصاد الرياضي للمفردات الإقتصادية.
لقد تجسد الإقتصاد الرياضي من خلال وصف النظرية الإقتصادية في صورة رياضة بإستخدام الأساليب الرياضية لإشتقاق العلاقات مستخدماً إفتراضات إقتصادية أساسية وقد ساعد ذلك في عرض التعاريف والفروض الخاصة بالنظرية الإقتصادية في صورة واضحة ومتسقة سهلت بدورها في إستنباط النتائج والعلاقات الأمر الذي له قيمته في حد ذاته.
وبالإضافة إلى أن هناك من النماذج المطلوب دراستها ويصعب تحليلها وصفياً أو بيانياً مثل النماذج الديناميكية او نظرية المنتج بإستخدام البرمجة الخطية وبالتالي يصبح صياغة مسألتها رياضياً أمراً ضرورياً.
