إننا نبني اقتصادنا بقراراتنا وتبادلاتنا وبأفعالنا وتصرفاتنا. إننا نعيش الاقتصاد يومياً بفتراته التي تعمّها السعادة والنمو والتوظيف والثورة، لكن أيضاً بفتراته التي تسودها التعاسة والشك والأزمة والبطالة والفقر والاختلال المناخي. إننا نعيش الاقتصاد كل يوم، لكننا لم نفهمه دائماً! وكم مرة نسمع ما يقال لنا: "الاقتصاد، أنا لا أفهم فيه شيئاً"، "إنه عمل المتخصصين"، مَن ذا الذي لم يقل: "ليس بمقدورنا فعل شيء، إن السبب هو الأزمة"، أو أيضاً "إنه قانون السوق"؟
يبدو أن الاقتصاد صار قدرياً، في حين إنه من إنتاج البشر. وكان المؤلف وفياً للفكرة الداعية إلى نشر المعرفة بين العدد الأكبر من الأفراد، وسعى إلى وضع فهم الاقتصاد في متناول الجميع.
تم تقسيم الكتاب ليشمل أربعة مفاهيم اقتصادية، موضّحة بالأشكال والمرتسمات. وكل من هذه الأقسام تتبعه مراجعةٌ وتأملٌ اقتصادي ومن ثم فقرة للنقاش. يسهّل هذا الكتاب تحليل العلاقات بين العوام الاقتصادية، سامحاً بفهم أفضل للآليات الاقتصادية الأساسية، وهو يوفر مفاتيح للفهم ولقراءة سهلة، لكنها إطلاقاً ليست مبسّطة للظواهر الاقتصادية.
