يشكل الأدب الشعبي لأي أمة من الامم قيمة من قيمها البارزة التي يؤرخ لوجودها وعمق جذورها على مدى العصور، وقد تنوعت أشكال هذا الأدب بين الحكاية الشعبية والأغاني والأهازيج والأدوات التراثية وغيرها، وكانت الأمثال أحد هذه الأشكال، إلا أن المثل أسرعها إنتشاراً بين فئات المجتمع، لأنه يفسر كثيراً من جوانب حياتهم الثقافية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والسياسية.
ولذلك، كان لا بد من معرفة أثر هذه الأمثال التي حفظها الناس وحافظوا عليها، واختزنوها من خلال تراكمات الماضي وما فيه من عبر ومواعظ، احتوت على جزء من تراثهم الأصيل، أمام تغول المحتلين والغزاة ومواجهة أطماعهم ورد إدعاءاتهم.
ركز هذا الكتاب على ما ورد على ألسنة كبار السن، فهم الأكثر حرصاً والأكثر تجربة وإستعمالاً للأمثال الشعبية التي تعتبر الحاضنة للتجربة، إلى جانب ما جُمع من المصادر والمراجع القديمة والحديثة.
وُجد أن المثل الواحد ونقيضه في نفس الوقت، وان ما ورد هنا، يصلح أن يرد هناك، لأن المثل الشعبي يضرب لتبرير موقف أو تبرير فعل أو تشبيه أمر بآخر، أو تحويله بسبب إنتشاره وشيوعه من الأقوال إلى الأمثال كما ستجده في فصل النجوم وأنوائها ومواسم الزراعة؛ وقد وجد أحياناً تداخلاً كبيراً بين الأمثال، لذلك قام بوضعها في إطارين في آن معاً، كضرب المثل وشرحه من جهة، وكتابة أمثال دون تعليق لمشابهة غيرها في المعنى، كقول المثل: "ما يتعرف خيري إلا لما تجرب غيري" ويناسبه في الشعر قول الشاعر: عتبت على عمرو فلما تركته... وجربت أقواماً بكيت على عمرو".
