"كانت غرفة النوم - أكبر من حجرتي - وفيها سريران، فجأة حبست أنفاسي مرتاعاً... رأيت فتاة ترقد على السرير وحول رقبتها يدان تضغطان بقوة... يدان لرجل، وكانت الفتاة تختنق ببطء، لم يكن هناك أي احتمال للخطأ، كان المنظر الذي أراه واضحاً تمام الوضوح، كان ما يجري أمامي جريمة قتل! كنت أرى وجه الفتاة بوضوح... شعرها الذهبي الناعم، ونظرت في عينيها ووجهها الجميل يحمر ببطء... أما الرجل فلم أر منه سوى ظهره ويديه، وندبة في الجانب الأيسر من وجهه تمتد حتى رقبته، تجمدت في مكاني ذهول المنظر دقيقة أو دقيقتين ثم اندفعت نحو الغرفة لأنقذ الفتاة... وعندما استدرت كان الحائط الذي يبدو في المرآة من خلفي مجرد دولاب ضخم من الطراز الفكتوري...".
في المرآة المتجسدة على الحائط شاهد المستقبل ورأى منظر فتاة شقراء تقتل بأيدي رجل يحمل على خده ندبة طويلة؛ رأى تفاصيل الجريمة، وسكت، ونسي ما شاهد مع مرور الأيام، ونسي أنه هو أيضاً يحمل نفس الندبِ على خده الأيمن، وأن ما رآه على وجه الرجل كان ندباً على الخد الأيمن وليس الأيسر.
تفاصيل شيقة وتحقيقات إجرامية معقدة هو ما سترويه "أغاتا كريستي" في هذه المجموعة من القصص والتي حملت كسابقاتها معالم إجرامية خطيرة وصور من أساليب القتل والتخطيط شاذة؛ لا نراها في الحياة الواقعية، أو يمكن أن تحدث في الواقع ولكنها تبقى بين أغلفة الملفات الجنائية.
