يأتي هذا الكتاب في ظروف مرحلة تتصف بالتحول المتسارع، ومن المنتظر أن تكتسب نتاجات هذه المرحلة خصائص غائرة متصلة بالتحولات التي حدثت في جوانب مختلفة من حياة المثقف العربي خصوصاً وغير العربي على العموم، ومن هذه التحولات ما هو معرفي ومنها السياسي والإقتصادي والأيديولوجي أيضاً.
ومن وجهة نظر خاصة، يبدو لي أن المقدمات الإبستمولوجية التي هيأت لهذه التحولات المتباينة راجعةٌ إلى أنساق فلسفية وفكرية وثقافية وعلمية وأيديولوجية، وهذه الأنساق - في العمق - لها جذور واحدة وإن تفرعت في السطح.
ومن الخصائص المشتركة لهذه الأنساق سرعةُ تحولاتها وتفاعلاتها مع طبيعة المرحلة المتحولة، وبالمفهوم القالبي للدماغ فإن لهذه الأنساق - ذات الطابع المعرفي - مبادئها المستقلة من ناحية، ومبادئها الكلية التي تمكنها من التفاعل فيما بينها من ناحية ثانية (فجميع هذه الأنساق تنشأ في الدماغ ومن الدماغ)؛ وكل هذه الأنساق - مجتمعةً - تتخذ من اللغة موضوعاً لها بوصف هذه الأخيرة مكوناً من مكونات الدماغ.
تمثل العلاقة بين مكوّن اللغة (الموجود في الدماغ) والأنساق الأخرى المذكورة جوهرَ التحول المعرفي الذي بدأ منذ خمسينيات القرن العشرين.
