لا يختلف اثنانِ على أن الفكر اللسانيّ لنعّوم تشومسكي قد طبع عصرنا بطابعه شكلاً ومضموناً، فقد امتازت اللسانيّات التشومسكيّة بطابع السجال النقديّ بلا هوادة، وكانت قد نشأت وتطورت بوصفها ردّ فعلٍ على اللسانيات الأمريكيّة السابقة ممثلة بلسانيّات بلومفيد وتلميذه سكينر التوزيعيّة المشبعة بالطابع السلوكيّ في الوصف والتفسير. غير أن للنقد عند تشومسكي منحيين اثنين؛ أولهما النقد الخارجيّ المتعلق بالسجال الشديد ضدّ المدارس اللسانيّة التي تختلف مع فكره اللسانيّ في وصف اللغة وتفسيرها، كالوظيفيّة بمختلف أشكالها، والسلوكيّة كيفما كانت، والآخر النقد الداخليّ المرتبط بفكره اللسانيّ نفسه. وهو سببٌ رئيسٌ من أسباب تطور اللسانيّات التشومسكيّة وطرحها أكثر من نموذج لوصف اللغة وتفسيرها.
