الكتاب هو مجموعة الفتاوى التي أفتى بها شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية في المسائل التي سئل عنها في حينه. وقد اعتمد في تحقيق هذه الطبعة من "مجموعة الرسائل والمسائل" للعلامة ابن تيمية على النسمة التي نشرها محمد رشيد رضا إذ يقول: قد جمع هذه المباحث والفتاوى عالم الشام… الشيخ جمال الدين القاسمي كتاب الكواكب وغيره من كتب شيخ الإسلام وفتاويه… ولكننا وجدنا فيه من الغلط والتحريف ما استبعدنا معه أن يكون عنى بتصحيحه.
وقد قام الشيخ رشيد رضا بإجراء التصحيحات اللازمة، وأما قيمة هذه المجموعة الدينية لا تقدر، ومن الغريب أن هذه المسائل كان يكتبها شيخ الإسلام أو يمليها من غير مراجعة كتاب من الكتب، ويعلم من كل فتوى منها، بل جملتها ومجموعها-أن ابن تيمية قد جمع من العلوم النقلية والعقلية الشرعية والتاريخية والفلسفية ومن الإحاطة بمذاهب الملل والنحل وآراء المذاهب ومقالات الفرق، حفظاً وفهماً، ما لم يكن لغيره وأغرب من حفظه استحضاره إياه عند التكلم والإملاء أو الكتابة، وإحقاق الحق وإبطال الباطل في كل منها من خلال الاحتجاج بالبراهين النقلية والعقلية، وفي ذلك نصر لمذهب السلف في فهم الكتاب والسنة على كل ما خالفه من مذاهب المتكلمين والفلاسفة، جاءت المجموعة ضمن مجلدين وقد ضم المجلد الأول رسائل وفتاوى في التفسير والحديث والأصول والعقائد والآداب والأحكام الصوفية، وضم المجلد الثاني رسائل في حقيقة مذهب الاتحاديين أو وحدة الوجود وبيان بطلانه بالبراهين النقلية والعقلية.
