يبحث الكتاب في معارضة ابن سينا باعتباره أحد المتأثرين بأفكار الفلسفة اليونانية, وكذلك اعتبار أبي علي بن سينا أحد أقطاب الفلسفة آنذاك. حيث نرى أن الشهرستاني ألف هذا الكتاب بناء على طلب نقيب ترمذي أبي القاسم علي بن جعفر الموسوي. ويتطرق الكتاب إلى سبعين مسألة في المنطق والطبيعيات ولإلهيات وبعض هذه المسائل: حصر أقسام الوجود, وجود واجب الوجود, توحيد واجب الوجود, علم واجب الوجود, حدوث العالم, حصر المبادئ, مسائل مشكلة وشكوك معضلة. فكان الشهرستاني يورد ما ذكره ابن سينا, ثم يبدأ في تفنيد زعمه واحدة واحدة, وقد استقى الشهرستاني كلام ابن سينا من أمهات تصانيفه مثل الشفاء والنجاة والتعليقات. وأكثر المسائل التي تناولها الشهرستاني تتعلق بوجود الله تعالى وكيفية إثبات ذلك الوجود, والفرق بين وجوده عز وجل ووجود غيره من الكائنات.
