كانت شهرة الشهرستاني كمؤرِّخ للفرق والديانات أكثر من شهرته متكلماً، إذ إنَّ كتابه "المِلَل والنِّحَل" ظلَّ على مدى قرون أهمّ مرجع قديم عن فرَق المسلمين، فضلاً عن الأديان الأخرى التي عرفها المسلمون آنذاك.
ونزعة الشهرستاني النقدية إنمّا جاءت نتيجةً لثقافته الشَّاملة، التي جمع فيها معرفته بالعلوم والأديان والفلسفات والمذاهب على إختلافها، وأصدق دليلٍ على ذلك كتابه "الملل والنحل" الأمر الذي دفع ابن تيمية إلى أن يقول عنه: (إنَّه أجمع من أكثر الكتب المصنفة في المقالات وأجود نقلاً)، أمَّا الزركلي فقال عنه: (كان إماماً في علم الكلام وأديان الأمم ومذاهب الفلاسفة).
وإذا كان الشهرستانيّ قد سار على نهج الغزاليّ في معارضته للفلاسفة ونقده لكثير من آرائهم، إلا أنَّهُ لم يتجاوز حدَّ النقد إلى حيث تكفيرهم كما فعل الغزالي.
وحسبه أنَّه كان أكثر دقة وموضوعية في الكشف عن مغالطات الفلاسفة في تعبيراتهم وفي أغاليطهم فيما تكلَّفوه من مصطلحات، والحقُّ أنَّ التساهل في إصدار أحكام بالكفر على المسلمين فرادى أو جماعات دونما رجوع في هذه الأحكام إلى مصادر يقينية في الشريعة، إنمّا هو ضرب من التجنّي، لا على مَنْ تقع عليهم هذه الأحكام فحسب، بل وعلى الشريعة الإسلاميّة ذاتها، ولئن كان مثل هذا الإتجاه - وخاصّةً في العصر الحاضر - يأخذ في ظاهره طابع الحماس الديني غيرةً على الإسلام؛ إلا أنَّه في حقيقته وتأدياته - في نظرنا - يضر بالإسلام وأهله، إذ يشيع من الفتنة والتمزق بين المسلمين مالا يحمد عقباه.
