تناول الباحث في هذا الكتاب سيرة الشهيد (محمد يونس السبعاوي). وتتبع حياته منذ ولادته في الموصل ورافقته في صباه وصحبته في فتوته ولاحقته في شبابه، وحاول في بحثه أن يمس العوامل التي تضافرت على تكوين شخصيته في تلك المراحل، كما حاول أن يكشف النقاب عن أبرز الملامح التي تتميز بها شخصية محمد يونس السبعاوي، إنساناً له جوانب قوة ولا يخلو من جوانب ضعف، قومياً يؤمن بعروبته ويبشر بالوحدة العربية ويسعى إلى تحقيق أهدافها بكل ما يملك من طاقة وحماسة، وطنياً يسعى إلى مقاومة كل نفوذ أجنبي يمس سيادة وطنه، عصامياً يشق طريقه وسط صعاب كثيرة بعناد وإصرار، شاباً ثائراً يتحدى بجرأة شبح الإعدام في قاعة المحكمة ويتقدم بخطوات ثابتة إلى المشنقة. عاشقاً تلتهب المشاعر في أعماقه وتثور الأشواق في جوانحه وتدفعه إلى كتابة رسائل عاطفية رائعة.
وقد اعتمد في إعداد هذا الكتاب على مصادر شتى منها: رسائل شخصية كان السبعاوي قد بعثها إلى صديقه (صديق الشيخ علي) في الموصل من (بغداد) تارة ومن (عنه) طوراً ومن (باريس) حيناً، وهي تعبر عن مرحلة من مراحل حياته في الثلاثينيات، وتكشف عن طموحه وآماله وعن كفاحه في سبيل مواجهة مصاعب الحياة وما تتطلبه مستلزماتها من كفاح من أجل كسب القوت والقيام بمسؤولياته العائلية.
ومنها أوراق (رفائيل بطي) الصحفي المعروف، وهي عبارة عن مجموعة دفاتر تضم معلومات متعددة عن أهم الأحداث السياسية التي وقعت في العراق في المدة الأخيرة، ومنها بصورة خاصة أحداث حركة مايس سنة 1941 وما سبقها من انقلابات عسكرية كمقدمات لهذه الحركة، وقد دونها رفائيل بطي بخطه وسجل فيها الروايات التي سمعها من الأشخاص الذين كانت لهم علاقة بتلك الأحداث أو اتفق من باب الصدفة أن مرت بهم وذلك قبل أن يمضي عليها مدة من الزكن وتختفي معالمها من الذاكرة، وقد مست تلك الروايات السبعاوي في مواضع متعددة منها ما يتعلق بحركة مايس سنة 1941، ومنها ما يتعلق بالحوادث السابقة لها.
ومنها ما كتبه محمد يونس السبعاوي نفسه من مقالات سياسية وأدبية في الصحف المحلية والمجلات وما ألقاه في المجلس النيابي والمجتمعات من خطب سياسية.
