"لا أدري إن كنت أمتهن الكذب، أو إنه جزءاً لا يتجزأ من طبيعتي. وعلى أي حال ففي تلك السن في الثالثة عشرة من عمري، كان خيالي ينبجس في كل الاتجاهات دونما وازع أو كابح، ولعل ذلك يرجع إلى غزارة ما كنت أقرأ من روايات وأشعار.
كان في سوق الدباغة في القدس رجل فرعوني يبيع الكتب المستعملة. أقول أنه فرعوني لأنني لم أكن أتخيله غير ذلك. فقد كان مصرياً كبيراً في السن، وكان يجلس في نفس مكانة من الدكان كل يوم كالتمثال الفرعوني ولا يتكلم إلا حينما يضطر إلى ذكر الثمن الذي يريده للكتاب. ولقد نشأت بيني وبينه صداقة بل زمالة. فكنت أشتري منه الكتب وأعود عند الحاجة فأبيعه إياها بعد قراءتها بأثمان بخسة. ومع الزمن تطورت هذه العلاقة إلى معرفة تمنحني حق استعارة الكتب التي أريد قراءتها لقاء أجر زهيد. ولكثرة ما كنت أقرأ أتاح إلى الرجل استعارة ما أريد من الكتب لقاء مبلغ أسبوعي ثابت مقطوع هو ثلاثة قروش، ربما أنه كان يفضل هذا النوع من الدخل الثابت رغم ضآلته.
قرأت كل روايات الجيب وشاركت المتنبي مواقفه في بلاط سيف الدولة في حلب وسرحت مع علي محمود طه على ضفاف الراين والنيل، وتأوهت مع إبراهيم ناجي على الحب الضائع: يا فؤادي رحم الله الهوى، كان صرحاً من خيال فهوى. كل ذلك وأنا لم أعرف ما الهوى بعد ولم أخرج من داخل أسوار القدس القديمة ولم أر أعرف ما الهوى بعد ولم أخرج من داخل أسوار القدس القديمة ولم أر من مرابع الجمال سوى حدائق المسجد وساحات الحرم الفسيحة".
ولد في القدس عام 1931. درس الأدب الإنجليزي والصحافة والسينما في بريطانيا وأميركا. عمل في حقول الصحافة والإذاعة والسينما التسجيلية في عدة بلدان عربية.
