دخل التشيّع إلى مصر منذ أمد بعيد إذ ذهب المقريزي إلى أن عدداً من الصحابة شهدوا فتح مصر، وعد منهم المقداد بن الأسود الكندي وأبا ذر جندب بن جنادة الغفاري وأبا أيوب الأنصاري وأبا رافع مولى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وهؤلاء ممن عرفت مجاهرتهم بحب أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب. وقد أورد كل من ابن تغري بردي والمقريزي الكثير من الدلائل على شيوع التشيع لعلي في مصر قبل ولايته عليها.
أما اليوم فإن الشيعة موجودون في القاهرة وبلاد مصر كلها وهم أقلية من الشيعة الأمامية الإثني عشرية لا يزيد عددهم على بضعة آلاف. ومن سنوات عديدة بدأ يدب التدهور بين الشيعة من سكان القاهرة ومصر كلها بسبب فقدان شخصياتهم الكبيرة من ذوي الجاه والمكانة الأدبية والمعنوية والمادية كما استطاع المحيط أن يستهلكهم بفقدانهم مقومات الشخصية الشيعية وبالأخير أصبح المتدين منهم يؤدي طقوسه العبادية على وفق المذاهب الأخرى.
يكشف مؤلف الكتاب عن جانب طالما تجنب الخوض فيه. فهو يعرض لتاريخ التواجد الإسلامي في أفريقيا، فيتناول بالبحث الدلائل على شيوع التشيع لأمير المؤمنين علي في مصر قبل ولايته كما أورد ذلك ابن تغري بردي كما يتحدث عن ولاية محمد بن أبي حذيفة، وقيس بن سعد بن عبادة وولاية الأشتر النحفي وولاية محمد بن أبي بكر قبل أن يستعرض جانباً هاماً من تاريخ الدولة الفاطمية.
وفي صفحات لاحقة يلقي الضوء على واقع الشيعة في الزمن الحاضر ويتحدث عن ذرية الإمام جعفر الصادق في القاهرة ومراقد آل أبي طالب.
