مؤلف هذا الكتاب الإمام المصلح أبي المزايا محمد إبراهيم بن أحمد بن جعفر الكنّاني ( 1325-1411ه ) هو من العلماء الذين يقدمون الكتاب والسّنة في الإجتهاد ، ويجعلون حرية الرأي ، واستقلال الفكر في إطار هذه الإضاءات والمعالم ، فهو وسط بين مدرسة محمد عبده وجمال الدين الأفغاني ، والمدرسة الحديثية الأصولية السلفية ، والمدرسة الوهابية الحنبلية .
من هنا ؛ فإن تأليفه لهذا الكتاب ، ووضع له عنواناً يعي مضمونه : " الدعوة إلى استقلال الفكر في الإسلام ، من الكتاب وسيرة الرسول العملية وصحابته الكرام " ، فهي دعوة إلى استقلال الفكر ، ولكن في إطار الشريعة الإسلامية والهدي القرآني ، وسيرة السلف الصالح ، ولهذا نجده يقول عن هذا الكتاب : " فنحن في هذه الأحاديث نريد أن نتعرف - على ضوء الآيات القرآنية ، والأحاديث النبوية ، وحوادث سيرة الرسول وخلفائه الراشدين ، وأئمة الهدى من السلف الصالحين - المدى الذي يستطيع المسلم أن يمارس في دائرته استقلاله الفكري من غير أن يكون بذلك في نظر الإسلام مرتداً عن الإسلام ، ولا خارجاً عن جماعة المسلمين " .
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة أقسام تتضمن محاضرات للمؤلف الكتاني ذات مواضيع ومفاهيم لها علاقة بالبحث في استقلال الفكر في الإسلام تستند إلى كتاب الله وسنّة رسوله وممارسة الصحابة الكرام الإستقلال الفكري بعد وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وفي عهد الخلفاء الراشدين . وجاءت هذه الأقسام تحت العناوين الرئيسية الآتية : القسم الأول : التنظير لاستقلال الفكر في الإسلام . القسم الثاني : مباحث الدعوة إلى الإجتهاد وتحرير العقل المسلم من كتاب " أعلام الموقعين عن رب العالمين " للإمام إبن قيم الجوزية . القسم الثالث : خلاصة لجملة ما ألفه أئمة الإسلام ، في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها ، على اختلاف العصور والأزمان ، من مؤلفات يدعون فيها للإجتهاد واستقلال الفكر في الإسلام .
