يكتسب الكتاب خطورته من أنه تضمن رصداً دقيقاً، وتقويماً، لحركة القومية العربية في العراق إبان العقد الثالث من هذا القرن، وأهم ما فيه - في تقديرنا - أنه رصد هذه الحركة في عنفوانها، ثم في إمتحانها، على حد سواء، فعني بتوضيح الجانب غير الرسمي، بل السري أحياناً، من تنظيمات تلك الحركة وأنشطتها يومذاك، مثل "كتلة الضباط القوميين" (1927) و"جمعية الجوَّال العربي" (1933) و"عصبة العمل القومي" (1934) و"نادي المثنى" (1935) و"التجمع الطلابي القومي" التابع له، و"الحزب العربي القومي" (1939).
ويزيد من أهمية الكتاب، أنه ليس من ذلك الضرب من الدراسات الأكاديمية التي تستقي مادتها مما تحتويه الرفوف الباردة من كتب، وإنما هو شهادة حيَّة لرجل عاش الأحداث بكل تفاصيلها، ونقل شهادات معاصريه في ساعة وقوع الحدث نفسه، وكان قريباً من قادة الحقبة وشخوصها البارزين، تربطه بهم صلات شخصية حميمة، ومن ثم فأنه انفرد بتقديم تفاصيل ذات شأن لم ترد في غيره، وقدم تفسيرات جديدة لأحداث وعلاقات جرت في حينها، وإذا كان تواضع المؤلف - رحمه الله - جعله يعرف عن تبيان دوره، وتوضيح عمله، فيما ساقه من أحداث إلا قليلاً، فإن لنا أن نعلم - من سياق سيرته الشخصية - أنه كان في قلب معمعانها، داخل في تفاصيل كثيرٍ مما وصفه، ويكفي أنه اتفق من عمره ثلاث سنين كاملة في معتقلات الفاو والعمارة ونقرة السلمان، ثمناً لموقفه المبدئي، ولعمله السياسي وأنشطته المتنوعة في الحركة القومية.
