"الباخرة الأخرى التي ترسو أمامنا على الرصيف الآخر تتجه إلى أثينا لنقل الجرحى. أم ناصر تلوح لي عن بعد ويدها اليسرى معلقة بجبيرة إلى كتفها للتمويه. تصيح كان من المفروض أن تكون معي. أعدها بلقاء قريب وكأنني مسافرة في مهمة. ثم أدرك أننا افترقنا فعلاً. فأنادي نجلاء، وأسمع في الماء صدى ندائي. ثم أفقد صوتي. تتحرك الباخرة (جول جورجيوس) في رحلتها الثانية إلى دمشق، والهتافات تشق البحر إلى نصفين. وتزلزل رصف الميناء، وانخرط في عناق حار مع المدينة . لا أستطيع الوصول إلى إدراك لحظة ابتعادي عن بيروت. ثم تجمد عيوني ويجمد قلبي ويحول الهواء البللوري اليابس بيني وبينها. أمد يدي فتصطدم أصابعي بجداره القاسي، ولا أستطيع لمس وجهها، تركض خلفي الوجوه والشرفات والأبواب وتنحني نحو البحر أو تلوح على الشاطئ، ثم تلحق بي إلى عرض البحر على جواد الريح، تعدو تعدو لكن السفينة تزداد ابتعاداً أهتف بها لا تلقيني بعيداً، لا تتركيني، خذيني إليك، بيروت: أقول لك سامحيني كما تقول جدتي صباح تناول السر المقدس. ومن فرط تقبيلي للشاطئ، ينسكب دمي على الأفق الغربي، والنوارس الزرقاء ترف فوق قرص الشمس الأحمر، وتتركه معلقاً على عذوبة الزرقة وتطفئ النهار".
وجدانيات مؤثرة تترافق وأصوات المدافع ودخان القذائف، وأنهار الدماء التي جرت بسخاء على الأراضي اللبنانية إبان حربها المزعوم بأنها أهلية. تروي مي الصايغ وبأسلوب شفاف يضفي على قصة تلك الحرب وعلى يوميات المقاتلين الفلسطينيين أثناء تلك الحرب، الكثير من الرومانسية والعذوبة الممتزجة بحنين الكاتبة وبحبها الجارف إلى لبنان وإلى كل نسمة تهب من جهته، واصفة لحظات الوداع وذلك عند ترحيل الفلسطينيين (المقاتلين منهم) من على أرضه، كأروع ما يكون من وصف. قصة مؤثرة بكل ما فيها حتى لخيل أن الكاتبة تروي الواقع دون تزيينات روائية.
