تتمثل أهمية البحث في الدور الريادي الذي قام به الإمام سفيان بن سعيد الثوري في مجتمع عصره، وتبينه مهمة الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، على الرغم من الظروف العصيبة التي كانت تحيط به بما فيها تنقله وترحاله من بلد إلى أخرى، وملاحقة رجال السياسة له وتتبعهم لأثره بسبب جرأته عليهم، وعدم مخالطته إياهم، ورفضه بإصرار قبول مناصبهم حتى لا يكون عالة عليهم، أو شريكاً لهم في ظلمهم للرعية وجورهم عليهم. كما تهتم الدراسة في تبيان أهمية الثوري على الصعيدين الشعبي والرسمي، ومدى تأثيره في رجالات عصره من الحكام وعاقة الناس. وخصوصاً بعد أن علمنا أن الخليفة العباسي أبا جعفر المنصور كان يقول فيه "ما بقي على وجه الأرض من يستحيا منه غير هذا.
أما موقف العلماء والزهاد من الثوري، فأول ما يطالعنا رأي بشر بن الحارث الحافي الذي أشار إلى أهمية الثوري وفضله عليه. وحقيقة الأمر، أن دراسة هذه الموضوعات إنما تهدف، قبل كل شيء، إلى إظهار قدر الرجال الأعلام من العرب والمسلمين الذين كانوا درة في جبين الأمة، ومن ثم تسليط الأضواء على موقف الحكام من رجال هذه الفئة، ومحاولاتهم الجادة لضمهم إلى حاشيتهم وبشتى الوسائل الممكنة، وذلك بغية إسكاتهم وكف نشاطاتهم المعادية للحكم. ومن الطبيعي أن دراسة هذه الشخصيات من شأنها أن توجه أنظار الدارسين إلى أهمية أصحابها، وتساعد من جهة ثانية، على فتح باب هذه الدراسات على مصراعيه، وكان طبيعاً والحالة هذه، أن يتركز الاهتمام في بداية هذا العمل على دراسة شخصية سفيان الثوري، وذلك لتتضح صورته من خلال تتبع مراحل حياته العلمية، وهذا الأمر يظهر مكانته الفكرية، وقدرته على الاستيعاب والحفظ، وتفوقه على أقرائه من الأئمة والفقهاء. وفيما يتعلق بالمجال الديني، فقد حاولت الدراسة إعطاء صورة واقعية عن عباد الثوري، وحقيقة زهده وورعه، وتواضعه.
