لقد سلف القول بأن هذا الكتاب يسعى إلى تتبع الخطوات التي سار عليها دوبري في تناول "الصورة": وهي خطوات تتشابك وتتعقد خصوصاً إذا علمنا أن دوبري لا يطرح السؤال: ما هي الصورة؟ إنه لا يعطيك ماهية الصورة نقية صالحة لكل عصر. بل يتتبع هذه الصورة عبر مراحل تشكلها وعبر عصورها المتميزة: أي عصور تحولها. كما يتتبع تقاطعاتها. محاولا الكشف عن "أنظمتها" حسب كل عصر. وعن مبدأ فعاليتها المرتبط بعلاقتها مع الوجود.أو عن "نمط وجودها" وعن "مصدر سلطتها" وعن "ابتعاثها". وعن "الهدف منها"، وعن "سياقها التاريخي" وعن "معيار عملها". وعن أفقها الزماني في ارتباط مع المواد التي تصنع منها ". وعن" إسناداتها".
فالصورة إذن تربط علاقة مع المكان والزمان، وتحولها مقياس لتحول هذا الأخير.
وهي لا تكتفي بتلك العلاقة التي تربطها مع الوسط الذي تتشكل فيه. سواء أكان جغرافياً أو أساسياً أو اقتصاديا. أو اجتماعيا. أو نفسياً. بل إنها أيضاً تربط علاقة مع الفكر وأشكاله: فالصورة إبداع ينتمي إلى شكل من أكبر أشكال الفكر والفن . كما أن علاقتها بالدين وثيقة؛ فهذا الأخير استخدمها واستثمر قوتها لاستمراريته وذيوعه. ولممارسة سلطته. فسلطة الصورة إذن تغذي سلطته.وتمنحها التماسك والقوةالتي يحتاجها خطابه الذي غدا بدوره هنا تبرز قوة الصورة. وهي ما حاول دوبري التركيز عليه؛ فالصورة سلطة بل في رأيه سلطة السلط. إنها السلطة الرمزية بامتياز.
