كتب التراجم والطبقات تعنى بتراجم العلماء والملوك والزهّاد. وكتاب البريهي يعدّ من ضمن تلك الكتب التي أرخت لعلماء اليمن. وقد بناء على النسق الذي سار عليه أسلافه من المؤرخين اليمنيين من حيث ترتيب التراجم على البلدان، ويبدأ تاريخه بتراجم علماء صنعاء ثم حراز وملحان وبريم وريمه، ووصاب ثم مخلاف جعفر (بعدان، وإب والسحول) وبلدة بني سيف ثم بلدتي حبيش والشوافي وجبلة ومعشار التعكر وختمهم بالعلماء من أهل تعز وزبيد وموزع وعدن. وقد استوعب أغلب تراجم علماء تلك المدن من القرن الثامن والتاسع.
