جاء في الأساطير، والتاريخ القديم أن آلة موسيقية قديمة العهد ظهرت في الممالك التي سبقت الميلاد، ويقال بأن مخترع العود هو "لامك" من أبناء الجيل السادس بعد آدم. ويقال بأن "يوبال" وهو من سلالة قابين ابن آدم والذي عاش قبل الطوفان بنحو 4000 ق.م. أنه كان أول من صنع آلة العود وعزف عليها بمهارة.
والكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته هو الثالث في سلسلة تمارين موسيقية لآلة العود، الذي وضعه الموسيقار اللبناني جورج فرح مؤسس ورئيس القسم الشرقي في المعهد الموسيقي الوطني في بيروت متابعاً من خلاله الرسالة الفنية الموسيقية التي يؤديها إخلاصاً للموسيقى العربية، وللموسيقيين والطلاب. وقد اختار لهذا الجزء تمارين على درجة عالية من الصعوبة، ومعزوفات منوعة من: بشارف، وسماعيات، ولونفات، ومعزوفات حرّة مبسطة نوعاً ما، مناسبة وموافقة لدرجة الطالب في سنته الرابعة والخامسة.
