شهد تاريخ البشرية ظهور حضارات متعددة، اندثر بعضها، وبقي البعض الآخر حيا يسهم وبكيفية فاعلة في مسيرة التطور الحضاري. وما من شك في أن التواصل الحضاري أخذ وعطاء في إطار العلاقة الجدلية بين الفكر والواقع (الفكر الواقع) سيظل يدفع بعجلة البناء والتقدم والتطور الحضاري.
ولقد كان للحضارات الشرقية القديمة، وعلى الخصوص حضارة وادي النيل وحضارات بلاد ما بين النهرين، الأثر الهام في نشوء الحضارة اليونانية والتي تميزت بقوة عناصرها الفكرية ولا سيما الفلسفة، ثم أسهمت هذه الحضارة وبدور فاعل في تطور الحضارة العربية الإسلامية خلال العصور الوسطى والتي كانت في حينها حضارة العالم أو الحضارة الإنسانية العالمية، حيث انتقلت هذه الحضارة إلى أوروبا فكانت من أهم عوامل نهضتها.
وإذا كانت الحضارة الغربية الآن هي الحضارة السائدة، حضارة العلم والتقنية، فلن تكون هذه الحضارة نهاية المطاف أو نهاية تاريخ مسيرة التطور الحضاري، بل إن كثيرا من مفكري الغرب يتخوفون في كتاباتهم على مصير هذه الحضارة، ويؤكدون على أنها تمر الآن في مرحلة تراجع وتدهور وذلك في غياب الجانب القيمي والخلقي فيها وتركيزها على الجانب المادي.
والحضارة الإنسانية التي بنتها الأجيال البشرية عبر العصور أصبحت تهددها الآن أسلحة الدمار الشامل من نووية وكيماوية وبيولوجية إذا استسلم الإنسان لغرائزه الحيوانية وتجرد من القيم والأخلاق والعقلانية، فالعقول التي أبدعت واكتشفت واخترعت، وتمتلك الآن هذه الأسلحة هي التي يجب أن تلتقي في حوار عقلاني يدفع بنتائج العلم ويوجه تطبيقاته لما فيه خير الإنسانية.
