يعد العلاّمة أبي عمرو بن العلاء البصري (ولد سنة 71 - توفي سنة 154ه) من القرّاء السبعة للقرآن الكريم،/ وواحد من علماء "القراءة" والتي هي تعريفاً "علم بكيفية أداء كلمات القرآن، واختلافها معزواً لناقلها" ولما كانت القراءة حجة الفقهاء في فهم ألفاظ القرآن. كان اختيار المؤلف محمد رياض الطبقجلي "قراءة أبي عمرو بن العلاء للقرآن الكريم" للدراسة. وقد بدأها بتمهيد مختصر من علم القراءات، وحياة أبي عمرو بن العلاء وإبرازها عن غيره من القرّاء وأهم أحكامها مع الشرح وقد تضمنت ثلاثة عشرة مبحثاً هي: الإستعاذة، والبسملة، وميم الجمع، والإدغام، وهاء الكناية، والمد والقصر، والهمزة، وترك السكت، والفتح والإمالة، والوقف على مرسوم الخط، والوقف على أواخر الكلم، وياءات الإضافة، وباءات الزوائد، و"الإدغام" الذي هو من أهم مميزات قراءة أبي عمرو، فهو من أشهر القراء السبعة في هذا المجال، وختمت الدراسة بـ "الفرش ..، أو ما يسمى بالفروع، أي المسائل الجزئية التي اختصت بها قراءة أبي عمرو وكانت خارجة عن الأصول، وقد اعتمد المؤلف في توثيق هذه الفروع على مصدرين هما: كتاب التيسير لأبي عمرو عثمان بن سعيد الداني، وكتاب معجم القراءات القرآنية، وكتب أخرى ذات صلة؛ واقتصر عمل المؤلف كما يقول على الجمع والموازنة وتدوين كل ما ورد عن أبي عمرو إبن العلاء من قراءة في الفروع من بداية فاتحة الكتاب إلى نهاية سورة الناس، مع الإشارة إلى مصنفات أبي عمرو في مختلف العلوم والفنون ومنها اللغة، والشعر، والأدب، والغريب، والحديث، والأنساب.
