أصبح القياس في يومنا هذا من أهم أدوات العلم الحديث، وربما يعود له الفضل فيما أحرزه العلم من دقة. أما في علم النفس فإن القياس يقوم على أساس وجود الفروق الفردية بين الناس في القدرات والمواهب والميول، مما أوجب قياس هذه الفروق قياساً رقمياً وكمياً دقيقاً.
والمجالات التي يطبق فيها القياس واسعة جداً، إذ يستخدم في الاختبارات العقلية والنفسية والتربوية والتحصيلية، بقصد تحليل قدرات الفرد ومواهبه واستعداداته وميوله ومهاراته وسماته ومن ثم يساعد ذلك في تصنيف الأفراد ضمن مجموعات متجانسة أو من أجل توجيه الفرد إلى أنواع العمل أو الدراسة التي تناسب قدراته، وقد يوجه الفرد إلى نوع التعليم الذي يوافق قدراته واستعداداته، التي يحتمل أن يحرز فيها أكثر درجة ممكنة من النجاح.
وللقياس أسس ومبادئ تثيره من أهمها أن يكون موضوعياً، لا يتأثر بالعوامل الشخصية كما يجب أن يكون المقياس الجيد صادقاً، وثابتاً. أي أن يقيس فعلاً القدرة أو السمة أو الاتجاه الذي وضع لقياسه. وأن يكون ثابتاً فيما يعطي من نتائج.
