صدرت الطبعة الأولى من كتاب "أشرف ألماني في ترجمة الشيخ محمد الكتاني" أو ترجمة الشيخ "محمد الكتاني الشهيد" سنة 1962 من تأليف ولده، الشيخ محمد الباقر الكتاني، مرت أكثر من أربعين سنة على صدور هذا الكتاب الذي لا غنى عنه لكل باحث ودارس لحقبة مهمة من تاريخ المغرب: تاريخ المغرب وتاريخ رجالاته. ما فتئت الزاوية الكتانية وخصوصاً مؤسسها الشيخ "أبو الفيض محمد الكتاني" موضوعاً لكثير من المباحث والأطروحات الجامعية والدراسات الأكاديمية، فكان هذا الكتاب مرجعاً لا غنى عنه، سواء من ناحية الوثائق التاريخية أو الحقائق التي يجليها حول حقبة فهمه من تاريخ المغرب.
يعرف هذا الكتاب بمصلح إسلامي كبير في الثلث الأول من القرن الرابع عشر، وبوطني مقتنع بالوطنية بمفهومها الواسع وليس الضيق، لأن الوطنية جزء من الدين و"حب الوطن من الإيمان" والوطن يعد مجاهداً في سبيل الله، لأن هدفه هو رفع راية الإسلام، والدفاع عن كرامة وطنه وطرد الاستعمار.
والكتاب شاهد على نضال وكفاح أناس كثيراً ما يظلمون، وتلصق بهم التهم، ونعني بهم: رجال التصوف والطرفية والزوايا. وفي جزء منه يتناول الكتاب الدور الرائد الذي قامت به الطريفة الكتانية ومؤسسها، في سبيل نشر العلم والوعي الديني، وطرد المستعمر، والدفاع عن استقلال البلاد، كما يتناول الإنتاج الصوفي للشيخ محمد بن عبد الكبير الكتاني، ويتضمن أشعاره الصوفية، وكذا أحزابه وأوراده وأذكاره، وهي تشغل بدورها زاوية من زوايا الأدب المغربي.
إن هذا الكتاب يصور لنا الفكر الإصلاحي الذي كان يتمتع به الشيخ الشهيد، ويتجلى ذلك في دعوته إلى الشورى، وإلى مقطعة البضائع الأجنبية، وثورته على الأمراض الاجتماعية الموجودة في عصره ويتجلى كذلك في دعوته إلى إصدار المجلات لتعميم الوعي ونشر العلم، وإلى تعليم المرأة لأنها نصف المجتمع. وقد كان هذا الكتاب مرجعاً لكثير من الدارسين والمؤرخين، نذكر من بينهم على سبيل المثال لا الحصر: العلامة محمد المنوني في كتابه "مظاهر يقظة المغرب الحديث"، ذلك أنه يعتبر محمد الكتاني داعية للسلفية الأول في المغرب، ويعتبره مصلحاً إسلامياً بالمغرب وعلى مستوى العالم الإسلامي، وذلك بعدما استعرض المواقف السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية للشيخ محمد الكتاني.
