"في بلاد حرة" هي قصة طويلة بالإضافة إلى قصص أخرى للكاتب الترينيدادي " ف. س. نايبول" والقصص ذات طابع سياسي وإجتماعي وتدور في بلاد أفريقية، الراوي فيها عليم يروي باستنخدام ضمير الغائب والشخصيات فيها متعددة بعضها جاذبة، وأخرى مرهوبة الجانب، وأما الزمن فهو غير متعين، ننطلق فيها من قراءة بانورامية للمشهد الروائي. ففي القصة المعنونة "في بلاد حرة" يحيلنا الروائي إلى البلاد الأفريقية ويقوم بدور الإخباري الذي يخبرنا بأن في هذه البلاد من أفريقيا (كولكتوريت الجنوبية) كان هناك رئيس، وكان ملك أيضاً وهما من قبيلتين مختلفتين وأن العداوة بين هاتين القبيلتين قديمة، ومع الإستقلال صارت مخاوف إحداهما من الأخرى حادة. والملك والرئيس يدبّران المكائد للحكومات البيضاء، وأن البيض وقفوا في صف الملك، لكن الرئيس كان أقوى بالجيش كونه من قبيلته، في ظل هذه الأجواء تدور القصة وتتخذ طابع الصراع بين مختلف الأعراف في العاصمة "المتمتعة بسمعة الحوادث العنصرية" بين البيض والسود "يقوم الرئيس الذي يملك الجيش الجديد بمحاربة قوم الملك، ويفتك بأفراد قبيلته، بعد فراره يمكن القول أن القصة تحمل ملامح التغير في النظام الإجتماعي والسياسي بعد الإستقلال، وهو ما يتمظهر في الموقف السياسي، والفكري، المنبت في الأصوات الروائية المتعددة التي تتحاول وتتقاطع في النسيج السردي في هذه البلاد الحرة شكلاً وليس مضموناً.
يضم الكتاب خمسة قصص جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- مفتتح من يوميات: الصعلوك في بيروس، 2- واحد من كثيرين، 3- قل لي من أقتل، 4- في بلاد حرة، 5- مختتم من يوميات السيرك في الأقصر.
