كان للمرأة العربي قبل الإسلام تصانيفها التي جمعت أخبارها وكشفت عن المعروفات منهن، ولم يقتصر التأليف على أخبار النساء بشكل عام، وإنما انصرف إلى الموضوعات الدقيقة بهن، وامتدت حركة التأليف لتقف على حياة النساء، وأخبار الشواعر فوضع أبو الفرج الشواعر الذي ضم واحداً وثلاثين اسماً من أسماء الإماء الشواعر، ترجم لأربع عشرة، منهن السيوطي في المستطرف، وترجم أبو الفرج الأصبهاني لأربع منهن في الأغاني باعتبارهن مغنيات ولم يترجم لهن باعتبارهن شواعر. ويأتي كتاب أبي الفرج استجابة لحاجة ملحة للتأليف والأسباب الموجبة لمعالجة ظاهرة الإماء الشواعر في عصره.
والكتاب يظهر براعة النساء الشواعر وهن يقفن مع شعراء العصر العباسي أمثال مروان بن أبي حفصة وأبى نواس وأبان اللاحقي والحسين بن الضحاك، وسعيد بن حميد وعبد الصمد بن المعذل، ويشهد لهن بالشاعرية الفذة. والصور التي تقدمها الروايات تكشف عن طبيعة المجالس التي عرفها العصر والأحاديث التي تدور فيها. ويستشهد المؤلف بقصائد ومقطعات جديدة تغني الدراسات الأدبية بنفحات الشواعر وهن يصورن أشواقهن ويعبرون عن دواخلهن، وقد انطلقت أساريرهن، ويعارضن الشعراء، الشعر بحضرة الخلفاء، وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً مما زاد في قيمة، وأهمية هذا الكتاب.
