يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم تحليل نقدي لعدد من نظريات الثورة ونماذجها، ويحاول المؤلف أن يسبر غور أعمال عدد من المنظرين الرئيسيين معاً، كما يحاول تحديد مدى الخلاف بينهم وأسباب هذا الخلاف، وتطوير "مقياس" يحدد لنا مدى اقترابنا من فهم الثورة عن طريق هذه النظريات، وليست هذه الدراسة مفصلة بأي حال، فهي لا تشير إلى كثيرين من منظري العنف والثورة، لكننا سنعمل على أن نقدم أهم الأعمال الممثلة لمنظري المدارس المختلفة التي سنعرض لها.
وأولى المشاكل التي ستواجهنا هي مشكلة تحديد ما هي الثورة، هذا السؤال الذي يبدو بسيطاً، إلا أنه سيزداد تعقيداً حين نستعرض التعريفات المقترحة. ورغم أن الانزلاق إلى منزلق التعريفات ليس مهمة شائقة، إلا أنه نقطة انطلاق ضرورية لتحليل أي من نظريات الثورة ونماذجها كما أنه إحدى النتائج المثيرة، التي يسفر عنها فحص التعريفات، وهي أن معظم النظريات لا تدور حول الثورة. فعلام تدور إذن!!
